Identify Potential Issues before Installing SQL Server Using System Configuration Checker Tool
Microsoft Introduced System Configuration Checker (SCC) initially in SQL Server 2005 and since then it's been available in all the versions of SQL Server. However, this utility is not used by most of the DBAs or Developers before they install SQL Server on a local server.
In this tip we will take a look at how to use System Configuration Checker (SCC) to identify potential issues before even installing SQL Server on any Local Server.
What Does System Configuration Checker (SCC) do?
System Configuration Checker basically scans the system where SQL Server will be installed and will check for all the conditions which can prevent a successful SQL Server Installation without actually performing the installation on the server. System Configuration Checker internally generates a report which contains a short description for each executed rule, and the execution status.
The system configuration check report is located at %programfiles%\MicrosoftSQL Server\120\Setup Bootstrap\Log\<YYYYMMDD_HHMM>\.
How to Use System Configuration Checker in SQL Server?
In SQL Server Installation Center click on Tools on the left pane and click on "System Configuration Checker" as highlighted in the snippet below.
This will open up SQL Server 2014 Setup Global Rules screen where SQL Server Setup identifies problems that might occur when you install SQL Server Setup support files. All failures must be corrected before setup can continue. Click on Details to review the Pass or Failure status for each of the rules. If there were any failed rules then you must address them before proceeding with actual installation. Finally, Click OK to close the Global Rules screen.
