Backup and Restore Enhancements in SQL Server 2014
SQL Server 2014 has been around for a while now and my organization is interested in deploying SQL Server 2014 for our latest projects. As a DBA, I was keen to explore SQL Server 2014 and to understand backup and restore enhancements in SQL Server 2014. In this article we will outline some of the key backup and restore enhancements in SQL Server 2014.
SQL Server Backup to URL Feature in SQL Server 2014
In SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU2 Microsoft introduced support for SQL Server Backup to URL for Transact SQL, PowerShell and SMO. However, starting SQL Server 2014 one can use SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to backup to or restore from Windows Azure Blob Storage Service (WABSS). Moreover, this option is also available for both Backup task and Maintenance Plans.

SQL Server Managed Backup to Windows Azure Feature in SQL Server 2014
SQL Server Managed Backup to Windows Azure is a service which SQL Server provides to manage and schedule database backups and log backups. In SQL Server 2014 release, only backup to Windows Azure storage is supported. DBA can configure SQL Server Managed Backup to Windows Azure either at database level or at SQL Server Instance Level. This will help one get granular control at the database level and automating it at SQL Server Instance Level.
Note: One can configure SQL Server Managed Backup to Windows Azure for SQL Server instances running on-premises as well as for SQL Server instances which are running on Windows Azure virtual machines. However, it is recommended for SQL Server instances running on Windows Azure virtual machines. For more information, see SQL Server Managed Backup to Windows Azure.
Encryption for Backups in SQL Server 2014
Microsoft has introduced Database Backup Encryption feature in SQL Server 2014. One can encrypt the data while the backup is in progress. One can encrypt the database backup by specifying Encryption Algorithm and an Encryptor (Certificate or Asymmetric Key) while creating database backups. SQL Server 2014 supports the following encryption algorithms: AES 128, AES 192, AES 256, and Triple DES.
